Ëtëtung

Water has a significant influence on the lives of the people of Vanuatu, particularly those in the Banks Islands, which are heavily forested and remote. Ëtëtung, the water drumming, is passed down from grandmother to mother to daughter. It is based on peace and respect and shows the reciprocal relationship between the islanders and the ocean. Climate change has impacted the people of Vanuatu and their livelihoods, but they continue to see nature as sacred. In a patriarchal society, Ëtëtung is women's way of telling their stories and is used to generate entrepreneurial opportunities and support community projects.

The Ëtëtung series is an imaginary voyage that evokes the sounds and rhythms of the water drumming and pays tribute to the enduring legacy of Vanuatu women’s strength and resilience.
